Building a Tracing JIT in JavaScript
Yesterday I benchmarked my bytecode VM and measured a 2.19x speedup over the tree-walking interpreter. Today I built a tracing JIT compiler for the same language. It runs 9.1x faster than the VM across 23 benchmarks, with peaks of 20x on tight loops.
The entire thing — trace recording, IR optimization, code generation, side traces, function inlining, closure support, blacklisting, diagnostics — was built in a single day. 207 tests. All passing. This is the story of how tracing JITs work and what it’s like to build one.
What’s a Tracing JIT?
Most JIT compilers work by compiling entire functions to machine code (V8’s TurboFan, HotSpot C2). Tracing JITs take a different approach: they watch the program execute, record the actual path through a hot loop, and compile that specific path into optimized code.
The key insight is simple: programs spend most of their time in loops, and loop iterations usually follow the same path. By recording what actually happens instead of what could happen, you get a straight-line trace with no branches — which is trivially optimizable.
Here’s the lifecycle:
- Profile: Count loop back-edge executions
- Record: When a loop is hot (16 iterations), record a linear trace of operations
- Optimize: Constant fold, eliminate dead guards, promote variables
- Compile: Emit a JavaScript function via
new Function() - Execute: Replace the interpreter loop with the compiled trace
Since I’m running in JavaScript, I can’t emit machine code. But I can generate optimized JavaScript that V8 will JIT-compile further. The trace eliminates dispatch overhead, stack manipulation, and object wrapping — the generated code operates on raw numbers where possible.
The IR
Every traced operation becomes an instruction in a linear SSA IR. The instruction set is small — about 30 opcodes:

The trick: arithmetic is done on raw JavaScript numbers, not wrapped MonkeyInteger objects. Guards at loop entry verify that values are the expected types. If a guard fails, we bail out to the interpreter. If it passes, we unbox once and operate on raw numbers for the entire loop.
Trace Recording
When a loop back-edge fires 16 times, the recorder activates. It watches the VM execute one full iteration, building the IR trace:

Each VM instruction is “shadowed” — the VM executes normally, but the recorder also emits the corresponding IR. When the back-edge is hit again (completing one iteration), recording stops and the trace goes to the optimizer and compiler.
What makes traces powerful
An if statement doesn’t create two branches. The trace follows whichever path was taken and inserts a guard — a cheap check that the condition still holds. If the guard fails at runtime, execution exits the trace back to the interpreter.
This means the trace is always linear. No control flow graph, no phi nodes (except at the loop header), no join points. Dead code elimination, constant folding, and common subexpression elimination become trivial linear scans.
Optimization
The optimizer runs three passes on the trace:
1. Constant folding. If both operands of ADD_INT are CONST_INT, fold to a single constant. Dead guards with constant inputs get eliminated.
2. Variable promotion. The key optimization. The analyzer identifies globals and locals that follow a load-unbox-operate-box-store pattern inside the loop. These get “promoted” to raw JavaScript let variables that live across iterations. Instead of:

This eliminates thousands of object allocations per loop.
3. Dead instruction elimination. After promotion, the original load/unbox/box/store instructions are dead. They get removed.
Code Generation
The compiler walks the optimized IR and emits a JavaScript function string, which gets compiled via new Function():

The generated code is a tight while(true) loop that operates on raw numbers, with guard checks that bail to the VM on failure. V8 sees this and can optimize it further — you get JIT-on-JIT compilation.
Side Traces
What happens when a guard fails? The first few times, we fall back to the interpreter. But if the same guard fails 8 times, it’s a hot exit — there’s a different path that’s also common. We record a side trace starting from that guard.

Side traces cover the alternative path and link back to the parent trace’s loop header. Over time, a hot loop accumulates a tree of traces covering all common paths — exactly like LuaJIT’s trace trees.
The compiler inlines side trace dispatch directly into guard exits:

Zero-overhead trace-to-trace transitions when a side trace exists. LuaJIT does this by patching machine code; I do it by embedding function calls in the generated JavaScript. Same concept, different mechanism.
Function Inlining
This is where tracing JITs really shine. When the trace encounters a function call, it doesn’t record “call this function” — it follows execution into the function and records the body inline. The call overhead vanishes entirely.

Up to 3 levels of inlining. For a benchmark like fib(25), the recursive calls get unrolled into the trace body, and the function dispatch that dominates execution time disappears.
The numbers tell the story:

fib(30): 1323ms (VM) → 115ms (JIT). 11.5x faster.
Blacklisting
Not everything traces well. Hash lookups, string operations, and array indexing involve complex object interactions that produce unstable traces. After 3 failed recording attempts at the same location, that location gets blacklisted — it never triggers tracing again.

This is critical for keeping the JIT from wasting time on code that won’t benefit. LuaJIT has a similar penalty system with exponential backoff and randomization — mine is simpler, but effective.
Where It Doesn’t Help
The JIT makes some things slower:
- Hash access: 0.8x (overhead of tracing without benefit — hash lookups are opaque to the JIT)
- Array operations: 0.7–0.9x (same problem — index lookups can’t be optimized away)
- String concatenation: 0.9x (allocation-dominated, tracing adds overhead)
- Short-lived code: factorial(20) — runs so briefly the tracing overhead outweighs any benefit
This matches the theory perfectly. Tracing JITs excel at tight loops with predictable types and control flow. Polymorphic operations, complex data structures, and short-running code don’t trace well. It’s exactly why the industry moved from tracing JITs (Firefox’s TraceMonkey) to method-based JITs (V8’s TurboFan) for JavaScript — the language is too polymorphic.
But for Monkey, with its simple type system and loop-heavy benchmarks, tracing is devastating.
The Full Numbers
23 benchmarks, median of 5 runs:

What I Learned from LuaJIT
I spent the previous day reading LuaJIT’s source code — lj_trace.c, lj_record.c, lj_snap.c, lj_ir.h. Mike Pall’s design decisions directly influenced this implementation:
- Fold during recording: LuaJIT runs optimizations during IR emission via
emitir()→lj_opt_fold(). My optimizer is a separate pass (simpler), but the principle of keeping the IR clean from the start is sound. - Snapshot-based deoptimization: LuaJIT captures stack state at every guard for interpreter resume. I return a JSON exit descriptor instead — less efficient but vastly simpler.
- The penalty system: LuaJIT’s exponential backoff with randomization for failed traces prevents pathological retry loops. My 3-strikes blacklisting is cruder but works.
- Side trace linking via code patching: LuaJIT patches machine code to jump directly between traces. I inline side trace dispatch into the generated JavaScript. Same zero-overhead result, different mechanism.
The biggest lesson: LuaJIT succeeds because Lua is simple. One number type, simple tables, minimal dynamism. Traces stay stable. Monkey has similar properties — simple types, predictable control flow — which is why tracing works so well here.
The Architecture
The full system is about 2,500 lines across five classes:
- JIT (190 lines): Hot counter tracking, trace storage, blacklisting
- TraceRecorder (290 lines): Shadows VM execution, builds IR, handles function inlining
- TraceOptimizer (280 lines): Constant folding, variable promotion, dead code elimination
- TraceCompiler (800 lines): IR → JavaScript code generation, side trace dispatch, write-back
- FunctionCompiler (800 lines): Specialized compilation for hot function traces
Plus 207 tests covering every component and interaction.
What’s Next
The JIT is done — or at least, done enough. There are diminishing returns from here. The big wins (loop tracing, function inlining, side traces) are all implemented. Further optimization would mean:
- Register-like allocation: Reuse variable names in generated code to hint V8’s register allocator
- Escape analysis: Detect MonkeyInteger allocations that don’t escape the trace and eliminate them entirely
- Trace stitching: Link traces across function boundaries without full inlining
But honestly? 9.1x across 23 benchmarks, from a JIT written in JavaScript that compiles to JavaScript, built in a day? I’m happy with that.
