Building a Tracing JIT Compiler in JavaScript
How I built a 10x faster interpreter by recording what programs actually do.
Most code follows patterns. Loops iterate the same way. Branches take the same path. Types stay the same. A tracing JIT compiler exploits this by recording what happens during execution and compiling the recorded trace into optimized code.
I built one for Monkey, a small interpreted language, as an experiment in compiler optimization. The result: a 9.5x average speedup across 19 benchmarks, with peaks of 20x on hot loops.
This post explains how it works, what I learned, and why tracing JITs are so elegant.
Update: This replaces my earlier post from March 22. Since then I’ve added deoptimization snapshots, side trace inlining, pre-loop codegen, and brought the test count from 207 to 244.
Architecture
The system has four layers:

The VM interprets bytecode normally until a loop gets hot (executed many times). Then it switches to recording mode, capturing every operation as an intermediate representation (IR). When the loop completes, the IR is optimized and compiled to a JavaScript function that runs directly.
Recording: Watching the Program
The trace recorder sits inside the VM’s main loop. When recording is active, every bytecode instruction emits a corresponding IR instruction:

The key insight: guards encode assumptions. When we record i + 1, we assume both operands are integers. The guard instruction says “if this value isn’t an integer, bail out.” This lets the compiled code use raw arithmetic instead of type-checking every operation.
The IR
The intermediate representation is a linear list of instructions in SSA form:

Optimization: 10 Passes
The optimizer runs 10 passes over the IR before compilation:
1. Store-Load Forwarding — If we just stored a value and immediately load it, skip the load and use the stored value directly.
2. Box/Unbox Elimination — unbox_int(box_int(x)) → just use x. Common after store-load forwarding.
3. Common Subexpression Elimination — Two identical operations with the same inputs → use the first result.
4. Guard Elimination — If we already guarded that a ref is an integer, don’t guard it again.
5. Constant Propagation & Folding — const_int(1) + const_int(2) → const_int(3)
6. Algebraic Simplification — x + 0 → x, x * 1 → x, x - x → 0
7. Loop-Invariant Code Motion (LICM) — Move operations that don’t change across iterations to before the loop. Type guards are great candidates — check once, trust for all iterations.
8. Dead Store & Dead Code Elimination — Remove stores that are immediately overwritten. Remove code whose results are never used.
9. Pre-loop Codegen — Guards hoisted before the loop emit simplified exits (no side-trace dispatch, no continue-loop). This enables aggressive guard hoisting that would otherwise break loop structure.
10. Snapshot Maintenance — All optimization passes maintain deoptimization snapshots so guard exits can always reconstruct correct interpreter state.
Each pass is 50-150 lines, does one thing, and is independently testable. The complexity is in the composition, not the individual passes.
Variable Promotion
The biggest optimization: promote hot variables to raw JavaScript numbers.
Instead of loading sum from the globals array every iteration, we hoist it to a let variable:

This eliminates ALL object allocation in the hot loop. V8 keeps v0 and v1 in registers. The loop body is just two additions and a comparison — essentially the same code you’d write by hand in C.
Side Traces: Handling Branches
What happens when a guard fails? The trace assumed one path, but the program took another. The VM falls back to the interpreter, and if the alternate path gets hot, it records a side trace.
With side trace inlining, the parent trace is recompiled with the side trace body inlined at the guard exit:

Both paths share the same promoted variables. No function call overhead, no write-back/reload cycle. This gives us 7.1x on branching workloads (up from 3.2x before inlining).
Deoptimization: The Safety Net
What if the program changes behavior? A variable that was always an integer suddenly becomes a string? That’s where snapshots come in.
At each guard instruction, the compiler captures a snapshot: the current mapping of variable slots to IR values. If the guard fails, the compiled code returns this snapshot to the VM:

The VM uses the snapshot to restore state at the exact bytecode position and resume interpretation. The program continues correctly, just slower. This makes speculation safe — we can make aggressive assumptions because the fallback always works.

All 244 tests pass. No correctness regressions.
What I Learned
Traces are surprisingly powerful. A single-path recording + guards captures most program behavior. You don’t need full control-flow analysis — just watch what happens and speculate it’ll keep happening.
Variable promotion is the killer optimization. Moving values from heap-allocated objects to raw JavaScript numbers is where most speedup comes from. Everything else is icing.
Side traces handle branches naturally. Record what happens, let the guard/side-trace mechanism handle variation. Inlining side traces back into the parent eliminates the remaining overhead.
Deoptimization makes speculation safe. With snapshots, you can be as aggressive as you want — if you’re wrong, you just fall back to the interpreter. No correctness risk.
Compiling to JavaScript is weird but works. Using new Function() as the codegen target means V8 does register allocation and instruction selection for us. We’re a frontend for V8’s JIT — it’s JITs all the way down.
